1998 President's Cup benefits PANZ

Greg Turner, New Zealand's number one golf professional, nominated Public Access New Zealand for a share of the proceeds of the 1998 President's Cup which was held in Melbourne late last year. This is a biannual international tournament where a team of the best golfers in the USA are pitted against the best from the rest of the world. Greg was a member of the international team that beat the US.

This is a charity event where, rather than the players benefiting financially, the proceeds are divided between charities nominated by the players. PANZ has received $US50,000 out of $US2.9 million distributed throughout the world.

This is a very welcome boost for us as we have been struggling financially since our inception. This extra money will permit new initiatives that further the interests of the recreational public -- moves we have wanted to make but have not had the means to do so until now.

PANZ continues to be dependent on regular subscriptions and donations from supporters so that our core work can continue. We urge supporters not to think that their financial contributions are now no longer needed -- and we also need large numerical support to be politically effective. The threats to our outdoors are so great and immediate that more action is necessary from us, particularly this election year.

Greg has supported PANZ from our inception. He is an avid freshwater angler, who feels strongly that the tradition of free public access to New Zealand's outdoors must be preserved. We will be ensuring that his generous contribution to us will be well spent.

A big thank you to Greg and the organisers of the President's Cup.
