We are indebted to cartoonist Garrick Tremain for permission to
reproduce his superb works- he has consistently captured the public
mood as the Queen's Chain has come under attack by successive
New Zealand governments.
1989
The last Labour Government introduced plans to dispose of marginal
strips. The resultant furore caused it to back off, unlike the
next (National) government.
1994
Shortly after the 1993 election Conservation Minister Denis Marshall began to 'snake-out' of his Government's promises to abandon plans for leasing the Queen's Chain - he finally achieved this alienation of publicly-owned water margins with the passage of the Conservation Amendment Act in 1996.
