Queen's Chain

Cartoons by Tremain

We are indebted to cartoonist Garrick Tremain for permission to reproduce his superb works- he has consistently captured the public mood as the Queen's Chain has come under attack by successive New Zealand governments.

1989

The last Labour Government introduced plans to dispose of marginal strips. The resultant furore caused it to back off, unlike the next (National) government.

1994

Shortly after the 1993 election Conservation Minister Denis Marshall began to 'snake-out' of his Government's promises to abandon plans for leasing the Queen's Chain - he finally achieved this alienation of publicly-owned water margins with the passage of the Conservation Amendment Act in 1996.
