Nohoanga watch

Keeping an eye on public exclusion

Albert Town Recreation Reserve (NT 23)

This is a DOC administered reserve on the banks of the Hawea River, upstream from the confluence with the Clutha River in Otago. It is one of the most intensely used informal public camping areas in the Southern Lakes district. The DOC sign above shows the nohoanga area (yellow cross-hatched) beside that remaining for public camping (red). In this case there is not the same competition for space as will occur at NT 26. However, given that the river and its immediate margins remain available for everyone as does use for camping, what practical purpose is served by this nohoanga? ...other than making a separatist statement, "this is our patch - keep out!"

The Hawea River is mid-ground, with a backwater in the foreground. The nohoanga is within the area of willows. The snow-capped Pisa Range is in the background.
