Nohoanga watch

Keeping an eye on public exclusion

Waterfall Creek (NT 32)

The entrance to this DOC administered reserve on the shores of Lake Wanaka, two kilimetres west of the holiday resort of Wanaka.

The nohoanga is part of a much larger reserve that is largely pasture and indistinguishable from surrounding farmland. The lake frontage has a newly constructed walkway from Wanaka, heading towards Glendhu Bay. This is heavily used. The shoreline receives heavy use for bathing, boat launching, and picnicking. The balance of the reserve has potential for expansion of active recreational use, including another camping ground for the district. Wanaka is rapidly expanding and public spaces are shrinking. Reserving such areas for future public needs is a more prudent use than privatising parts of them for exclusive camping.

The popular bathing beach at the mouth of Waterfall Creek. The new walkway is visible at centre. With a frontage like this, are Ngai Tahu going to pressure the Government in future to allow them to freehold the nohoanga, and open up subdivision and development opportunities?

Ngai Tahu Claims Settlement Act 1998

"Section 257. Vesting of entitlement land--- (1) At the Crown's discretion, the Crown may vest in Te Runanga o Ngai Tahu an estate in fee simple in any [nohoanga] entitlement land".
