Nohoanga watch

Keeping an eye on public exclusion

Timaru Creek (NT 27)

This is a Land Information New Zealand administered area of Crown land on the eastern shores of Lake Hawea, at the mouth of Timaru Creek (boundary markers shown). It is a relatively small level area, enclosed by steep mountain sides. It is one of few suitable camping areas on the eastern shore. It was developed as a public camping area by the former NZ Forest Service, despite it not being State Forest under its control. Up valley is an extensive area of state forest (now conservation area) that is popular for day walks and extended overnight tramping. The lake shore is popular for fishing.

The hectare now occupied by the nohoanga is more than half the level area suitable for camping. This may create pressures on remaining public camping opportunities. However the large sandfly population at this site may have the last laugh, keeping camper densities, both private and public, under control!

Like other nohoanga, their discriminatory nature is 'in your face'. The public is shut out of using an area that would otherwise be available to them, for the benefit of some private campers.
